Safe & Healthy Communities

Violent crime has been at an all time high and people feel unsafe. This isn’t about crime in just one neighborhood, this is happening throughout our city and it is unacceptable. It is also complex – there is no one solution to this problem. But it starts with making sure our public safety employees have the tools and staff they need to keep us safe while improving relationships between the police and the community. Brett will build upon our decades of experience in community policing and get our officers out of their cruisers and in our neighborhoods - on foot, on bikes and at community meetings. At the same time, Brett knows we need to explore or expand alternatives – like diversion programs, on-call behavioral health response teams and change how we handle 911 calls because we know that not every call needs a response from an officer with a gun. And finally and most importantly, it also requires immediate and significant investments in opportunities for youth-- employment, recreation and education.

Education & Opportunity

After letting down our students for decades, the State took a big step forward by taking over the Providence school system. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit soon thereafter and the takeover effort never really took off. Now more than ever, our students need access to accelerated, accessible and equitable delivery of educational support in the classroom and out. As Mayor, Brett will be the fiercest advocate and champion for our students, our families and our community. He will hold the State accountable and direct City resources where our students and families need– high quality childcare and PreK opportunities, increased investments in middle school and transition years and ensuring every student is college or career ready.

Sustainability

Brett pledges to move Providence towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Climate justice and community resiliency is an equity issue. We know that many of our urban neighborhoods are disproportionately impacted by decades of poor air quality and exposure to emissions. The City crafted a Climate Justice Plan with an inclusive community process, and Brett believes it provides a solid framework to reach our goal of carbon neutrality and creating a healthier, more sustainable tomorrow. In order to lead by example as a city, Brett pledges to convert 100% of our school buses to electric by 2040 and will convert all city buildings to renewable electrical and heating supplies.

Affordable Housing

Nationwide there is a housing crisis. We know that in our communities of color, renters and low-income families face the greatest hardships, particularly in light of COVID-19. Rents are rising too quickly and homeownership, which provides economic mobility, is becoming more difficult to achieve. Everyone deserves access to affordable, safe, and stable housing and Brett believes that by increasing housing units at affordable prices and creating better pathways to homeownership, we can support all people in Providence.

Efficient & Effective Government

Providence has the potential to be the best-run city in America, if we can get back to the basics and focus on simple quality of life issues. That will require better coordination across City departments and better vendor management, including roadwork, trash removal and snow plowing. We need to get used to doing things the right way, the first time. Brett also believes that residents and businesses should not have to physically go to city hall to receive assistance. As mayor, he will invest in our digital infrastructure so that we can provide the best customer service to our taxpayers possible, including dedicated small business support.

Inclusive Economic Development

Providence is an amazing city with an incredible restaurant scene, world-class universities and a thriving creative economy that makes for a unique community for residents and visitors alike. For too long Providence has relied on the State for its economic development strategy . Brett believes that by building an inclusive and comprehensive economic development plan — for the Providence community, by the Providence community — we can rebuild Providence's economy after COVID-19 in an equitable way and make sure no one gets left behind in a post-pandemic world. In order to best support our residents, we must adapt our economy for the jobs of the future and train people to thrive in those jobs. As Mayor, Brett will increase partnerships with the public and private sectors for more “earn and learn” opportunities and experience-based workforce training that can lead to increased employment for many Providence neighbors who are unemployed or underemployed.
